How a game runs
A game in a couple of minutes
Type a question, fill in two to four answers, tick the right one. Repeat. There is nothing to publish and no draft: the PIN works the moment the game is made.
A host screen for the room
Open the host link on the projector or a shared screen. It shows the PIN, the players arriving, a countdown for each question, how many have answered, the answer counts at the reveal, and a leaderboard between questions.
Phones are the buttons
Each player sees a coloured, lettered tile for every answer, matching the big screen. The question reveals itself when time runs out or when everyone has answered, whichever comes first.
Nothing kept about players
Players give a nickname, nothing else. No email, no account, no tracking — and the whole game is deleted 24 hours after it is made.
When a quick game is the wrong tool
A game made here is built for one sitting: a pub quiz, a team meeting warm-up, the last ten minutes of a lesson. If you would run Kahoot! for it, this probably fits — multiple-choice and true/false questions, a timer, points for speed and a leaderboard.
It is not built to be kept. It cannot be edited once made, it is gone after a day, and only the person with the host link can run it. For a quiz you will use again, with typed answers, more players, or a link people take on their own time, make it from a free account instead.
It is also not a test. Nicknames are not identities and a game cannot be marked by hand. For graded work with a timer and a pass mark, use the exam maker.
Game maker questions
- Is it really free, with no account?
- Yes. Write the questions, press Create game, and you get a PIN and a host link. Neither you nor your players sign up. Players need only the PIN and a nickname.
- How do players join?
- They open votense.com/play on a phone, type the six-digit PIN shown on the host screen, and pick a nickname. The host screen lists names as they arrive and you can remove one with a click.
- How is it scored?
- A right answer scores up to 1,000 points, falling to 500 as the timer runs out, so speed counts but a slow right answer still beats a fast wrong one. Answers are timed by our server, not the phone, so a slow connection does not cost points it should not. Ties go to the faster total answer time.
- How long does a game last?
- 24 hours from when it is made. After that the game, every player and every answer are deleted — download the results as CSV at the end if you want to keep them.
- What is the host link, and what if I lose it?
- The host link is the only key to the game: whoever opens it controls the questions. It is shown once, when the game is made, and this browser remembers it. Lose it and the game cannot be run — make a new one, which takes a minute.
- What are the limits?
- Up to 20 questions, 4 answers each, 50 players, a time limit of 10, 20, 30, 60 seconds per question, and 10 new games an hour from one network.
- What does an account add?
- Quizzes you keep and replay, typed answers and multi-select questions, self-paced links that people take on their own time, and — on paid plans — games for up to 1,000 players.
