Free quiz maker with live games
Write a quiz, put it on the big screen and let the room play on their phones — a countdown for every question, points for speed, and a leaderboard between rounds. Or share it as a link that marks itself.
- Up to 50 players free (1,000 on Advanced) join with a PIN — no app, no account
- Multiple choice, multi-select, true or false and typed answers
- Scored by our server: 1,000 points for an instant answer, 500 at the buzzer
- Podium, final table and a CSV of every player’s points
How a live quiz works
1. Write the questions
Multiple choice, multi-select, true or false, or a typed answer. Mark what is right, pick a time limit from 5 seconds to 2 minutes, and set the points — 1,000, double, or any number you like.
2. Press Host live
A lobby opens with a six-digit PIN. Players go to votense.com/play on any phone, enter the PIN and a nickname — no app, no account.
3. Play
Each question gets a countdown. When time is up or everyone has answered, the answer is revealed with how many chose each option, then the leaderboard, then the next question.
What you get
Speed points the server decides
A correct answer earns 1,000 points if instant, falling to 500 at the buzzer. Time is measured when the answer reaches our server, so a fast phone, a slow network or a fiddled clock cannot change the order.
No spoilers from the front row
Phones are told whether they were right only when the big screen reveals the answer, for everyone at once. Nobody can read their own result and shout it out.
Or share it as a link
The same quiz works without a host: share the link, everyone takes it at their own pace, and each person sees their score with the right answers under the ones they missed. Turn on exam mode for a timer, shuffling and grades — see the exam maker.
Results you can use
The quiz results page shows the score spread, the hardest questions and the top scores. Every live game keeps its final table for 30 days, with a CSV of each player’s points per question.
Start from a ready-made quiz
Every template comes with its questions, answers and correct marks filled in — and the answers listed on the page, if you just need the questions.

Where another quiz tool is the better choice
None of these is a roadmap promise. If you need one today, pick a tool that has it — the Kahoot! comparison goes through them side by side.
Team mode and game variants
Every player plays for themselves. There is no team mode, no power-ups and no alternative game modes. A room can still play in teams by sharing one phone per team.
Images, video and AI-written questions
Questions are text. There is no image or video in a question, and no AI that writes a quiz from a topic or a document.
More than 1,000 players
A live game takes up to 50 players on the free plan and 1,000 on Advanced. For a stadium-sized event, use a tool built for very large events, or share the quiz as a link, which has no player cap beyond the plan’s response limit.
Slides and presentations
A live game is a quiz, not a slide deck. If questions need to sit between presentation slides, a presentation tool with built-in quizzes fits better.
Quiz maker questions
- Is the quiz maker free?
- Yes. Creating quizzes, hosting live games and sharing quiz links are on the free plan, which includes 10 quizzes, polls or surveys with 100 responses each. Paid plans raise those limits.
- Do players need an account or an app?
- No. Players open votense.com/play in any phone browser, type the six-digit PIN and choose a nickname. Only the person who makes and hosts the quiz needs an account.
- How many people can play a live quiz?
- Up to 50 players per live game on the free plan, 300 on Basic and 1,000 on Advanced. Taken from a link instead, the limit is the plan’s response limit per quiz.
- How are points calculated?
- In a live game a correct answer earns from its full points (answered instantly — 1,000 by default) down to half (answered at the buzzer); a wrong answer earns nothing. A question can be worth any number of points from 0 to 100,000. Taken from a link, every correct answer earns its full points, and multi-select questions can give partial credit.
- What question types are there?
- Multiple choice with one right answer, multi-select (all-or-nothing or partial credit), true or false, typed answers, and essays you mark yourself. Typed answers ignore capitals, accents, punctuation and extra spaces, and a question can accept several answers. Essays appear when the quiz is taken from a link, not in live games.
- Is this a free alternative to Kahoot?
- For running a live quiz with phones, a countdown, speed points and a leaderboard, yes. It does not have Kahoot!’s team mode, game variants, images in questions or AI question writing — see the comparison page for the detail.
- Can people cheat by looking up the answers?
- The answers never reach a player’s phone before the reveal, and the server decides every score. What no quiz tool can stop is someone searching the question on another device — short time limits are the defence.
