Market research survey template

Market research surveys fail in a predictable way: they ask people to predict their own future behaviour. This template leans the other way — it asks what people do today, what that costs them, and what they chose last time — and screens out respondents who are not in your market before they answer anything else.

The survey beside this text is live. Fill it in and submit it — it validates exactly as it would for a real respondent, and saves nothing.

Screening with conditional logic

Later questions carry a condition on the first one, so someone who answers “No” sees a short survey and someone who answers “Yes” sees the full one. Hidden questions are never required and store nothing.

A matrix for purchase factors

Price, features, support, ease of use and brand are each rated for importance in one table. The Results tab shows a stacked bar per factor, which ranks them without asking anyone to rank.

Results that never include free text

The results view charts choices and counts how many people answered each open question, but written answers appear only in your own responses screen and CSV export.

No card required.

How to use this template

5 steps in the editor. Nothing here needs a paid plan.

  1. Press “Use this template” and rewrite the first question so that one answer clearly marks someone outside your market.
  2. The questions after it are set to appear only for people who pass that screen. Check each one’s condition under its settings after you edit the screening options.
  3. Replace the purchase factors in the matrix with the ones that matter in your category, five at most.
  4. Decide your sample before you share: who, how many, and where the link will be posted. A survey answered by whoever saw a tweet describes your followers.
  5. Use the Results tab for the choice questions and export the CSV to read the open answers alongside the segment each came from.

What goes wrong with this survey

Specific to this template, not general advice about surveys.

Asking “would you use this?”

Nearly everyone says yes; it costs them nothing. Ask what they did the last time the problem came up, and how much time or money it took.

Leading the screening question

“Are you a decision-maker who buys software?” invites a yes. Ask something neutral with several plausible answers and qualify on one of them.

Recruiting from your own audience

Your mailing list already likes you. For a market, as opposed to a customer base, you need respondents who have never heard of you.

Editing a screening option after adding conditions

A condition points at a specific answer. If you rename or delete that answer later, reopen each dependent question and re-select it, or the question will stay hidden for everyone.

Questions about this survey

How many responses does a market research survey need?

It depends on how you will split the results. A rough working rule is at least thirty answers in every group you intend to compare, so three segments need closer to a hundred than to thirty. Check your plan’s response limit before you launch.

How do I screen out people who are not my target market?

Ask a factual question first — “Do you currently manage a team?” — and add a condition to each later question so it shows only for the answer that qualifies. Avoid telegraphing the “right” answer in the wording.

Can I ask about price?

Yes, but ask what they pay today rather than what they would pay for something hypothetical. Stated willingness to pay is reliably higher than real behaviour; current spend is a fact.

Can I stop the survey at a quota?

You can stop it after a total number of responses under Settings → Advanced. Quotas per segment — stop after fifty managers, say — are not available; filter by segment in the export instead.
