Science test with answers for middle school

Ten questions across the core of a middle-school science course: photosynthesis, the human body, cells, states of matter, forces, chemical formulae, the Solar System — and one written answer explaining the phases of the Moon. Nine questions mark themselves; the written answer is yours.

The quiz beside this text is live. Fill it in and submit it — it validates exactly as it would for a real respondent, and saves nothing.

An essay question with teacher marking

The Moon-phases question is worth 6 of the 25 points and is marked by you, with a comment the student sees on release.

Item analysis after the test

The results page shows how many got each question right and the most common wrong answer — useful for spotting a misconception, such as everyone picking “Venus” as the closest planet.

What goes wrong with this quiz

Specific to this template, not general advice about quizzes.

One-word typed answers

Typed answers accept the listed spellings only. “Heart” and “the heart” are both accepted here; add any others your class might use, such as a misspelling you are willing to allow.

Releasing before marking

If you release scores before marking the essay, students see a total that will change. Mark first; the Grade screen shows how many are still waiting.

Questions about this quiz

Can I mark the written answer?

Yes. The essay waits on the Grade screen, which lists the attempts still to mark first. Give marks and a comment; the total, percentage and grade update, and the student sees your comment when you release scores.

Can I give it to my class through Google Classroom?

Use the Share menu to post the link to Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams, or send it by email. Students open it in any browser without an account. Grades are not synced back automatically — export the gradebook CSV.

What does the written question expect?

A full answer explains that the Sun always lights half of the Moon, and that as the Moon orbits Earth over about a month we see different amounts of that lit half. The template gives it 6 points — adjust to your mark scheme.
