Math test with answers, ready to assign

An eleven-question math test for upper-elementary and early middle-school students: mental arithmetic, fractions, decimals and percentages, prime numbers, perimeter and area, and one question where the student explains their method in words. Ten questions mark themselves; the explanation is yours to mark.

The quiz beside this text is live. Fill it in and submit it — it validates exactly as it would for a real respondent, and saves nothing.

Partial credit on a multi-select

The prime-number question is worth 3 points with partial credit: each right tick earns its share and each wrong tick takes one back, so a student who finds two of three primes still scores.

Custom points and letter grades

Questions are worth 2 points, the multi-select 3 and the explanation 4 — 25 in all — with A to F grade bands and a 60% pass mark already set.

Results held for marking

Because one question is written, scores are held until you release them, so no student sees a total that is about to change.

No card required.

How to use this template

4 steps in the editor. Nothing here needs a paid plan.

  1. Press “Use this template”. Edit any question, its points or its answer — the editor keeps the correct marks as you go.
  2. It opens in the exam editor with the time limit, shuffling, pass mark and grades already set. Change any of them under “Exam settings” before you share the link.
  3. Share the link with “One attempt per person” on. Each student gets 30 minutes, a different question order, and is submitted automatically when time runs out.
  4. Scores are held until you mark the written answer on the Grade screen and press Release. Then each student’s private results link shows their score, grade and your comment.

What goes wrong with this quiz

Specific to this template, not general advice about quizzes.

Units in typed answers

A typed answer must match once punctuation is removed, so “16 cm” and “16” differ. This template asks for measurements as multiple choice with the units shown.

Too short a timer

Thirty minutes allows about two and a half minutes a question. Cut it for a quick check, but leave room for the written answer, which takes longest.

Questions about this quiz

Can I mark the written answer?

Yes. The essay waits on the Grade screen, which lists the attempts still to mark first. Give marks and a comment; the total, percentage and grade update, and the student sees your comment when you release scores.

Can I give it to my class through Google Classroom?

Use the Share menu to post the link to Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams, or send it by email. Students open it in any browser without an account. Grades are not synced back automatically — export the gradebook CSV.

What grade level is this math test for?

It suits roughly grades 4 to 6 (ages 9 to 12): times tables, division, equivalent fractions, adding fractions with different denominators, percentages, rounding, primes, perimeter and area. Swap questions to fit your class.

Do students need to type answers exactly?

Typed answers ignore capitals, spaces and punctuation, so “56” and “ 56.” both count. Fraction and percentage answers are multiple choice, which avoids format arguments.
